Water: The Different Ways It Enhances Your Well-Being.
Whether you drink it or feel it, water is beneficial for you.

Water is the most common inorganic chemical compound on the earth’s surface. It covers 70,9% of our planet and is necessary for all known forms of life. It is also a structural element of our body. In all of its forms, from the glass of water you drink when you are thirsty to the water of a lake, river or the sea where you usually enjoy a swim, water provides plenty of benefits.

Necessary for your body

About two thirds of the human body is water which plays an important role in almost every function, since it regulates its temperature, is a structural element of the cells, removes toxins, serves as a lubricant for joints and helps improve blood circulation, the transport of nutrients, digestion and even sleep. Additionally, water benefits people following a specific diet, as it creates a feeling of saturation and serves as a substitute for less healthy drinks such as soft drinks or sweetened juices.

Furthermore, water improves the skin and gives it a bright and youthful complexion. Dehydrated skin has a dull appearance, while wrinkles and pores are more visible.

And for your brain

Water is also necessary for the good physical activity and function of the brain. Even mild dehydration can cause fatigue, muscle weakness, low energy levels and a bad mood while leading to decreased memory function. Therefore, it is very important to drink enough water while working. The same applies to physical exercise. Make sure you drink plenty of water before, during and after your workout.

It should also be pointed out that dehydration can cause headaches and migraine for some people. The intake of water can help their prevention and treatment.

The usual recommendation is two litres per day. However, this quantity can change depending on weight, physical activity, disease or the temperature of the environment. Furthermore, the quantity of water in other beverages or foods like fruits and vegetables has to be counted in.

Not only fresh water is beneficial

Seawater is also beneficial, even if it is not drinkable. A swim in the sea can improve our health and mood. It was Hippocrates who first used the word «thalassotherapy» to describe the healing effects of seawater.

Seawater is full of vitamins, minerals, trace elements, amino acids and micro-organisms and therefore enhances our immune system. It can also combat skin diseases like acne, psoriasis and eczema and help treat respiratory system problems such as asthma.

Swimming in the sea improves blood circulation and physical activity in the sea in general can relieve aching muscles and help the treatment of arthritis. Additionally, the feeling of weightlessness in the sea while swimming not only provides excellent exercise but also calms the mind.

Water in nature as a stress reliever

In general, the contact with water enhances our well-being. The sound of the waves and running water creates a feeling of relaxation and promotes mental health. This is why the sea, lakes, rivers, waterfalls and even fountains and other constructions with water in urban environments influence our feelings and improve our mood.

As water is precious for our health and well-being, we should not only make sure to have it in our lives, but also protect it from pollution and avoid wasting it.
